How can I prevent eviction?

Can my landlord evict me if I can’t pay my rent?

  • The CDC eviction moratorium is in place until July 31st, 2021. While this should protect renters who meet certain qualifications from eviction, this protection is not automatic. You must complete the following form and submit it to your landlord (preferably through email and/or certified mail) to qualify. More information about how to complete this form and copies of the declaration in multiple languages is here.

  • Even if you qualify for the CDC eviction moratorium, evictions can begin on August 1st. You are still required to pay all of the rent you owe to your landlord. Click here to learn how to apply for emergency rental assistance if you are behind on your rent.

I have received a demand from my landlord or I am worried my landlord may begin eviction proceedings soon.

  • Landlords begin the eviction process by posting a demand for repayment. Currently, renters are allowed 30 days after that to pay what they owe. When that 30 days expires, the landlord can take the case to court.

  • As soon as you receive a demand for repayment, reach out for assistance! There are free legal services that can help you if you are worried about being evicted. See below for some options:
